In this beautiful novel, the most ordinary people become heroes, displaying the most extraordinary capabilities of offering love. The semi-literate grandmother, the steady but ever-hopeful butcher, the earnest yet fragile boy, the damaged and self-wounding mother--each voice is rendered beautifully, uniquely, drawing the reader further and further into their psyches. Victor Lodato’s language—sometimes funny, sometimes irreverent, sometimes elegiac--creates a world that is so rich it is impossible not to be involved in the lives of these people and the mysteries that kept propelling them. There were times when I was in a state of dread—will everything be okay? And other times I was comforted by the everyday intimacy of a well-worn relationship. The whole notion of how, for some people, it takes time to learn how to love is heart-breaking, especially as played out in the story. The book gets better and better as it goes along, with a final section that is simply breathtaking. This is a very fine novel, truly the work of a poet and a work of the heart.
I was struck right from the beginning by the author's talent with constructing such gorgeous sentences. His ability to use verbs is unique, wonderful phrases like, "shepherding meatballs." I was so taken by Edgar, and he was so different and unique a personality that I couldn't help feeling he was very much like the author as a child. All the characters weave together so well and one can picture them vividly. Wonderful book, but I felt that the beginning was stronger and the book became a bit long, however, it was greatly enjoyed.

Lodato is a courageous writer who explores the edge mysteries of harsh damage, raw sorrows and tragic mistakes, blended with a generous good heartedness. He unfolds territory I feel, as a writer myself, many of us can’t, or won't, travel far enough to dare, or imaginatively know how, to reveal. To me it's a level no psychology or philosophy book can reach and illuminates the significance of great art. A full-on vision quest into the human soul. Lodato's young, strangely poignant Edgar and Lucy, his distressed Mom, are with me for life, surrounded by a cast of characters so rich, as the New York Times Book Review says, each one deserves a novel of their own. Until you read the book, no adjective can reach them. Within his range, he also brings home a magical grandmother, and a butcher, just a plain working guy who longs for love in his gorgeous earnest way. Count on Victor Lodato to bring you deep into the cave, and out again. Not only to the undertow but also to shore. His delightfully funny, rhapsodic prose lights up not simply all the BIG stuff. But just life. Like the wild luminous moment when Edgar slices a tomato. An ordinary event leaps to the universal. Go!! Be touched by greatness. It's not surprising that Lodato is a poet and dramatist; the lyricism of the prose and the complex, theatrical build of the story, show off these talents to great effect. This is a beautifully written novel about grief, secrets, and the enduring ties, both painful and loving, that bind people and families. The propelling feature of the plot is the disappearance of an 8-year-old and what happens to him and his guilt-ridden and grief-stricken mother, a woman who awoke to filial devotion and unselfish love rather later in life than many. But nothing in this novel is simple or conventional. Ostensibly set in present-day New Jersey (of all places), the novel's use of magical realism gives it a surreal quality that transcends both time and place, making it feel like a cross between a fairy-tale (the dark kind) and a fable. Death hovers over the story, and dead characters make regular appearances to help and haunt the living. That Lodato pulls this all off in a naturalistic, almost believable way, is one of his major achievements. Magical realism isn't easy to do, but he's mastered the genre. His characters are all flawed yet undeniably human. I found it impossible not to care about any of them, even the tough and often thoughtless Lucy, whose inner "imp" causes her as much pain as others, and Conrad, whose bizarre mix of selfishness and selflessness made him fascinating if ultimately irritating.
The one flaw, at least in my eyes, is that the last third of the book slows down significantly. I'm not sure the long wind-up to Edgar's eventual "rescue" was necessary. Conrad's tortured psyche and Edgar's own ambivalence about returning home are well established early on, and the frequent returns to those themes start to drag the book down. Still, that said, this is a charming and unusual story by a first-rate talent, and well worth the read.
I adored this book. I don't want to write the kind of review that offers an outline of the plot points, because if you read the plot points alone you might think this is merely an interesting novel. It's beyond interesting. It's beautiful; it's extraordinary; it's magical. The characters, with all their quirks and flaws, are divine. Lodato is a wonderful writer. I haven't loved a book this much since All The Light You Cannot See. I cried through the last twenty minutes, half because of what was happening and half because I was getting near the end of an experience I didn't want to end. And as soon as I could breathe again, I ordered Lodato's first novel.
